There is a big difference between knowing something and doing that thing. Sometimes you feel you know a thing, in fact you can even explain the whole procedure of how to do that thing but when you are brought face to face with it, you discover that there are some loopholes, errors or challenges while doing it. A perfect analogy to this is our school certificate: If you have a certificate; say of your first degree, it simply means you have successfully passed the necessary courses and exams of that field. In other words, the certificate proves that you know about that field. But again, you will agree with me that a large number of graduates cannot practice or do the work to which they studied in school. If you give them the tools, materials, equipment they need, they cannot produce any tangible result but that does not mean they do not know about the work or cannot explain or give an overview of it – A Computer Science Graduate might know a lot of programming languages but cannot produce an app or website if given all that is needed, a graduate of Architecture might have drawn thousands of plans but cannot work on site and the building be whole. Beloved there is a very big difference between knowing something and doing that thing; and the awesome news is that the world is not interested in what you know, it is interested in what you can deliver or produce. In other words, the world needs people who can do….. So the question is: What can you do?
If you are given all the necessary equipment and materials, can you produce something tangible? When you know something, it is a potential – Potential is something that has the ability to work or be successful under favourable conditions. In other words, when you know something, there is the possibility that the knowledge will produce results IF WORKED UPON! Just like a seed; you don’t eat seeds but when you have a seed, you are a potential rich man because when you work on that seed, plant it, water it, monitor it, it could grow to become a full blown tree that will produce numerous fruits.
The same way you don’t eat seeds is the same way the world is not looking for people who know, they are looking for people who can do! People with value – Value here represents the fruits; the result of the worked upon seed; the worked upon potential! These are the people that the world is craving for; people who right now have something to offer; people who right now can solve a problem. Beloved, what do you have to offer?
Right now, right here as you are, what do you have to offer to your world? Knowing is not enough, you must be able to apply. Potential is not enough, you must have value. A man of 68 years works in a company whose management and staffs are youths; he is over his retirement age but the company still retains him because there is something that man is doing for the company that no one else seems capable of doing – He has a value that the company needs. So no matter how bad they need to lay off workers; that man cannot go: He has value!
What values do you have? What do you have to offer? Beloved, Be Valuable!
I challenge you today to make a table with two headings: Potentials on one and Values on the other… Write out a list of your potentials: Things you know, things you have knowledge about but you cannot actually produce any result with it (You may know Java programming language but can you use java to create an app? If no, that is a potential). Then write out the things you can do, your values…. Write it down and examine closely!
